I’m not sure what a shield is. I’m able to get it right up to the lash line. Love this curler!

I have not found any sharp edges. The top and bottom portion of where you put your eyelashes have a softish rubberized piece that protects your eye. I have used it every day and have not had any issues with being cut or poked. To me it is very comfortable to use.
